WWII Rare U.S. Army Document Lot, Switzerland Leave for P.F.C. T. Dunnigan For your consideration, fresh from an estate, is this rare document lot for P.FC. T Dunnigan which includes his U.S. Army Leave Pass for Lugano, Switzerland Vacation Guide Pamphlet, U.S. Army Document for Travel Instructions to La Havre, and U.S. Army Document from Headquarters about Leave In Switzerland. 1. WWII Pamphlet for Switzerland Vacation in Lugano 1944 & Leave Pass For your consideration, fresh from an estate, are these two rarely seen Original WWII Documents for Leave in Lugano Switzerland. These documents belonged to P.F.C. T. Dunnigan, who is named in another document in this lot that was found in this estate grouping. There is a small blue pass for Lugano that reads “American Leave Action/ Your Hotel in LUGANO/ Primrose Paradiso, Date/ Arrival:/Depature:”. The pass is blank. The other piece is a pamphlet type Guide for Lugano Switzerland. It starts off as a little booklet with beautiful font and back cover art, and then it unfolds. When unfolded it includes one side with incredible full page artwork, and the other side with Ferry Times and instructions in four different languages. There is also useful information for a soldier about food, hotels, and pricing. I have read that the image depicted on the front, of the lake and the mountain, was inspired by Ernest’s Hemingway Book “A Farewell To Arms” where a soldier escapes incarceration by rowing a boat to Switzerland. This cover art depicts a view towards freedom, not towards the fighting, and that is what the artist intended. When you unfold the pamphlet you have a side that has a beautiful depiction of the area, with 4 incredible Floral accents. This pamphlet is a work of art, not just an Guide of the Ferry Times. There are direction and notices under that, and I think a guide to some of the pricing. This document has portions in Italian, German, English, and French. These two rare pieces would make an excellent addition to your militaria collection because they represent the moments away from fighting for American Servicemen. Leave Pass Size: 3 x 3 1/2” Switzerland Pamphlet Size: 9 7/8” x 11 7/8” (Unfolded)5” x 6” (Folded) Condition: This items are in as found vintage condition from the estate. They are old paper documents from World War II and as such they display their age through various forms of wear, thinning in areas, and some slight discoloraiton. There is also some bending and bumping to the corners, and some period writing in red pen to cross something out that was no long applicable. There are some small holes and thin areas on the creases on the pamphlet, where the folds held for countless years, but it is overall stable. The leave pass has some bumping to the corners and two pieces of old tape on it, please see the pictures. WWII U.S. Army Document Travel Instructions For PFC Dunnigan to La Havre in 1945 Next is this World War II Document which contains travel instructions for a PFC Dunnigan, T. It designates that he will “Take the Train at the Switzerland Leave Center Railhead at 1320 Hrs. This Date And Change There For Your Desitation. Assembly inside Gaeity theatre at 1500 Hrs.” Gaiety Theatre is located in Dublin, Ireland. This document would be an excellent addition to your collection showing what was probably the last travels of a PFC Dunnigan, T. as he made his way home from service in World War II. He was located in Switzerland when he was issued this document, it has the location as La Havre France, a port in France as his midpoint destination. Dated: December 22 1945 Name: Private First Class: T. DunniganI identified 5 Thomas Dunnigan’s who served during World War II, this is possibly one of theirs. There was also one Tarr Dunnigan, all could have potentially posses this document. Some research and you might be able to find out which. Size: Overall Size With Black Background: 8 1/2” x 11 1/8”Document Size: 6 7/8” x 7 3/8” Condition: This document is in as found vintage condition. It has wear and discoloration associated with its age. It is attached to the black background by at least tape, possibly glue as well. WWII U.S. Army Document Headquarters Instructions For Switzerland Personnel Leave This document, also for P.F.C. T. Dunnigan has information and instructions regarding traveling in Switzerland. Also included in this document is an allotment for a Coke, Haircut, and other such necessities! Then there is a section on Do’s and Don’t’s for Army personnel. This list of Do’s includes: “Be a Gentleman and Soldier at all Times” “Check your firearms… before coming into Switzerland”, and information that drinks with meals, and showers at hotels will be additional cost and are not included in Switzerland. The Don’t’s include “Don’t bring firearms into Switzerland”, “Don’t get Drunk!”, “Do not bring blankets!”. “Do not overstay your leave in Switzerland, its AWOL”, This powerful and compelling document and gives the reader deep insight into what a soldier had to do before, during, and after their trip to Switzerland. I find the Do’s and Don’t’s rather comical, and as such think it would be a great display piece. Another interesting line is “Photographs may be taken, but DO NOT take photographs of Swiss Military Installations”, even though it is 1945, there are still many precautions being taken because of the war. Dated: 1945 Size: 8” x 10 1/4” (In Folded Position) Condition: This document is in as found vintage condition from the estate. It contains a fold because the document is so long, and that fold has been taped for reinforcement. There are thing areas of the document and pinholes in worn areas like the creases, please see the pictures provided. Overall this document set offers a glimpse into what leave would be like for a soldier during World War II. This set includes P.F.C. T. Dunnigan’s Leave Pass, a travel guide from Lugano Switzerland, Named Document For Transportation to La Havre, and Travel Instructions from Headquarters. All this documents have individual descriptions and condition disclosures in the description. Each document is in as found vintage condition and display wear and sign of period use.
