Ty Puppets such as these are used in performances where the audience is seated in front of the small stage and can observe the wayang set, dalang, and orchestra. A typical performance lasts from sunset to shortly before sunrise, and the dalang is accompanied by a gamelan orchestra, and one or more female singers, who introduce the individual scenes and explainsthe course of events. This form of folk theater is usually performed in the village squares, courtyards, or the village roads and were usually lively and colouful, and dalangs usually use the theater to not only entertain but only to adapt to current events and comment on political and social conditions. Stories and the skills to magically carve a plain piece of wood into these marvellous artwork are handed down from one dalangs to another, from one generation to the next. This marvelous art form is slowly eroded and becoming extinct in the modern world, as fewer and fewer of the younger people are willing to continue the tradition and preserve the artform against the fast paced modernism and consumerism. The older dalangs and puppet makers are sadly passing on, most without someone else to continue carrying their torch. The wayang I am offering is mine and I have had for years. The craftsmanship and quality of carvings and paintings, are marvelously preserved, many despite having seen action in years of performances.
