1953 Abstract Expressionist oil on masonite board by well listed artist Anthony Triano (Am., 1928-1997). This painting surfaced at a NJ country auction some years ago, which is where I bought it. It’s an unframed 20 x 24 inch painting. Painting signed and dated lower left “Triano 53”. 1953 was a key year for Abstract Expressionism. Triano was a young guy at the time, but the big name artists such as Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, etc., started exhibiting at the Stable Gallery Annual shows in 1953. “The Stable Annuals represented what came to be known as the New York School abstract expressionists of the 1950s”. Triano exhibited in New York, in the area where Pollock and de Kooning lived, such as at the East Hampton Collectors exhibition, Guild Hall, Long Island, NY. In 1952, Triano had just completed his studies under Reuben Nakian, who had been friends with de Kooning since the 1930’s. Triano would come to know the early innovators through his mentor, Nakian. But, it was Nakian who directly inspired Triano’s Abstract Expressionist style. Offered here is the earliest Abstract Expressionist oil I’ve ever seen or known of by Anthony Triano. The orange and blue palette here is very eye catching. When you look closely, toward the upper center, there are abstract people forms that I really like. The painting was done in a sort of wash technique so that ‘drip’ areas could play out. Jackson Pollock was the famous dripper, but he did it in a different way. When Triano was good, he was great. I posted a picture of an exhibition postcard for a past Triano show so that you can see what another great Triano painting looks like. I also posted pictures of the artist and his bio that I found on the net. With all artists, often what we see on the market isn’t their best stuff. This is why prices are all over the place. If you’re like me and really just want the best, consider this example by Triano. It’s not in bad shape but it does have some loss per wear, scuffs, plus some scrapes that may or may not be intentional. It’s a busy painting, so my eye isn’t too bothered by the flaws but ideally they should be touched in. I think the painting would look fantastic in a vintage wormy chestnut frame (just a suggestion). For maybe 15-20 years now, there’s been a somewhat healthy little business going on in the trade where decorator types seek vintage or new abstract artwork for ‘wall art’. Some of the decorator types have huge followings on Instagram, Chairish, etc. I’m not really into that scene. I want paintings that have more going for them than just ‘a look’. I like to know about the artist and I like when the artist and their work fit into the bigger art story. Here’s one Triano bio, from the net: “Anthony (Tony) Triano (1928-1997) was a famous New Jersey painter, sculptor, and illustrator. He was also an artist-in-residence and later tenured professor at Seton Hall University. He exhibited his work in 37 one-man shows and numerous group shows. Triano was born in 1928 and was raised in Kearny and North Artlington, New Jersey. As a child Triano was an avid illustrator, a hobby that he continued at age sixteen when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Triano was stationed in the South Pacific and continued to draw, finding his subject matter in the war. Upon the ending of the World War II, he enrolled at the Newark School of Fine Arts under the GI Bill of Rights in 1946. While at the Newark School of Fine Arts he became a friend and apprentice to famous sculptor Reuben Nakian. Nakian helped Triaino develop his own version of Abstract Expressionism. In 1971 Triano was accepted to Seton Hall University as an artist-in-residence and one year later he became a full-time professor. Triano was an important influence on campus, showing and teaching love and appreciation for the arts. Despite not holding a Master’s Degree in an art-related field, Triano was awarded tenure in 1977. Triano’s works are featured in public and private collections, including the Newark Museum, the Montclair Art Museum, the Johnson & Johnson, William Paterson University, and Seton Hall University, among many others”.
