In one of the more interesting recent developments in the world of fountain pens, Montegrappa has launched a series of pen models designed by actor and director Sylvester Stallone. A long-time aficionado and collector of Montegrappa pens, Mr. Stallone also served as the face of Montegrappa in the company’s advertising campaign. Purchased at Davidoff Flagship Store in Geneva, Switzerland on July 2015. Papers are stamped accordingly. The concerned pen has never been used or inked. Excellent condition. Light handling marks.Silver coloured and celluloid cap and barrel, the cap with a dagger clip and chased with a snake, the barrel with a skull and lizards.Medium (M) 18k – 750 gold nib, stamped 18K 750, piston filling system.Comes with specific and matching Montegrappa Chaos display box (worn, see photos, the inner lining is deteriorated), outer box, authenticity certificate and information booklet. Extracts from the booklet:On the banks of the Brenta River stands an historical building in one of the most picturesque areas of Bassano del Grappa. This ancient town in the heart of the prosperous north-eastern region of Italy is the home of Montegrappa. Established as a manufacturer of gold nibs and fountain pens, Montegrappa quickly became famous for products which blend perfectly the hallmarks of the brand: tasteful design and superb craftsmanship. It has been so since 1912.Bassano had the misfortune of being in a major war zone during World War I. For the young company, however, it proved fortuitous. Many soldiers stationed there used Montegrappa pens to write home. Among them were two legendary American authors, Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos, who were both volunteer ambulance drivers at the front. Their respect for the pens of Montegrappa made them eager ambassadors for the brand.Montegrappa has built its success over the years by preserving a tradition that embodies the soul of Italy and its passionate history, the sublime beauty of its countryside, its vibrant colours and its unforgettable fragrances. It is the mystery that has challenged and enthralled every culture, every individual, whether spiritual or secular.For the ancient Greeks, Chaos is the original void from which everything else emerged. In Genesis, the first volume of the Old Testament, the earliest conditions of the Earth were defined as “without form, and void.” Chaos in itself forces meaning onto a great confusion of things, of ideas, of feelings. It is the dark sphere where the idea of death dominates.Power, energy, and emotions trigger a positive system that give order to matter and illuminates life.With his muse awakened, Stallone chose to devise a representation of Chaos of his own making, in the shape of a most appropriate device that, like Chaos, adds form to a blank space: the pen. Of this entanglement, they created movement of the perennial signs of the struggle between life and death, interpreted by the primordial saurian, by the reptilian, by snakes and lizards … and by the skull.As Mr. Stallone explained, “My idea of Chaos is a sense of the Renaissance, when things were more simplified and perhaps more noble, placed against our current technological society.” Drawing on classical art to help express this idea, to ensure that their use of the language was cultivated and not misused, the Mr. Stallone and Montegrappa’s designers turned to the work of 16th century artists including Battista Franco, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Sebald Beham, and Antonio Pollaiolo. In deep, sculpted relief, they forged the images of Chaos and of Death, entwined inexorably and eternally.Sylvester Stallone’s Chaos pen features a body fashioned from black pearlised celluloid, with overlays in sterling silver. The overlay is hand-finished by Montegrappa’s skilled craftsmen and features an “antiqued” finish, with accents in translucent enamel. The predominant black and silver contrast with reds and yellows, the colours of fire.Your Chaos pen is part of a collection offered as a limited edition of 1000 fountain pens in sterling silver, the number 1912 representing Montegrappa’s date of establishment.And although it is not as mighty as the pen itself, the ultimate defining detail, bearing both a fist and a skull, is the pen’s pocket clip… in the form of a sword.
