THE Avignon Mail occupies an important place in the international French-language press of the 18th century.th century. It enjoys a reputation for independence linked to its publication in a papal enclave of the kingdom of France. “Without being totally usurped, this reputation was largely exaggerated” (R. Moulinas, 1992). In fact, the newspaper escapes the press control system in France (privilege with prior authorization) but is subject to the control of the papal authorities. In addition, there is a permanent threat hanging over him: the termination of the advantageous contract entered into in 1740 with the management of the French postal service. Contract that allowed the sale of the Avignon Mail at a lower price than other French-language foreign gazettes and thus ensured its wide distribution. Before the “postal revolution” of the 1950s (R. Moulinas, 1977 and G. Feyel, 1992) a subscription to a Dutch gazette costs in France around a hundred pounds, after 1759 a little over £30; a subscription to the Avignon Mail evolves between £6 (1733) and £18 (1748). The Courrier d’Avignon appeared from 1733 to 1793 with an interruption between February 1769 and August 1775, when it was published in Monaco (annexation of Avignon to France from 1768 to 1774). Biweekly since 1733, it became triweekly in July 1789 and then appeared 6 times a week in January 1790. From the end of 1733 this periodical proved to be an excellent commercial affair, which is why it continued to arouse covetousness until 1793. In December 1733, François Morénas, creator and editor of the Courrier d’Avignon, was forced into association by the bookseller-printer Charles Giroud. The latter asserts his rights as holder of the privilege of reprinting foreign gazettes in Avignon, he will produce and distribute the Courrier. In 1739, Pierre Valfray, holder of the privilege of reprinting La Gazette in Lyon, tried to prevent the entry of the Courrier d’Avignon into France. It was in response to this attack that Giroud concluded a treaty with the French postal management. He was thus able to distribute postage-paid goods in Dauphiné, Provence and Languedoc under very advantageous conditions (treaty renewed and extended to the whole kingdom in 1750). In 1742, Morénas having left Avignon, Giroud took advantage of his absence to break their partnership contract and seize the title, the writing of which he had continued by authors whose names we do not know. In 1750 Giroud reconciled with Morénas, whom he took on as a salaried editor until the Courrier d’Avignon was closed during the French occupation. From 1769 to 1775, the privilege of the Gazette de France applied in Avignon, Morénas took over the periodical. He continued until his death (1774), with a printer from Marseille, under the protection of Prince Honoré III of Monaco.
