This is an authentic (NOT a modern reprint) vintage 1967 photogravure by the internationally renown Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh. This vintage sheet fed gravure plate was originally issued as part of a now rare bound photogravure portfolio, engraved and printed in high quality gravure by Joh. Enschedé En Zonen, Haarlem in the Netherlands in 1967. The paper is of fine quality and the prints themselves are simply beautiful to behold. Karsh himself wrote about the superb quality of these 1967 photogravure plates with the following words: “for the first time the photographs that have been my life’s work were reproduced by a mechanical process with complete fidelity. So true is the result, indeed, that friends have said they find it difficult to distinguish between these photogravure plates and the hand-printed originals from my darkroom. The production of these plates involved considerable technical achievement. But technology is only a means to an end. More significant and gratifying to me is that many thousands of people, who previously may not have seen an original Karsh photographic print but had to rely on the often inadequate reproduction of standard printing methods, were now able to see the fine details, the subtle graduations, the delicate nuances which reveal underlying character”. Yousuf Karsh’s iconic photographic portraits are held in museums and important collections throughout the world. This photogravure is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Under magnification this plate shows a tight “honeycomb” cell structure, uniform pressing of ink and a wide range of tone – all indicative of a high quality sheet fed gravure plate. The watermark word “Finephoto” does not appear on the actual print. ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine “honeycomb” screen controls the amount of ink to be transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900’s photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to its significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today.
